Behind the Beautiful Forevers

Beautifully adapted from Katherine Boo’s book by David Hare, this play takes us into the Mumbai slums. Combining subtle and realistic billboard backdrops with full projection on all of the walls of the Olivier theatre for specific moments of high-drama action, the video content was carefully matched to the emotion of the piece throughout.

“Paul Arditti’s sound design and the video by Jack Henry James regularly startle us with the whoosh of a jetliner descending, symbolic of the larger world that the play’s characters know only from the detritus the passengers toss in trash cans.”
Charles Isherwood, The New York Times

“A brilliant video and sound (designed by Jack Henry James and Paul Arditti) evocation of airplanes ominously and ear-piercingly swooping in over the characters’ heads periodically reminds us of their inconsequentiality…”
